Cajuput Oil
Cajuput oil is produced by steam distillation of fresh leaves and the twigs of the cajeput tree. The tree is native to tropical Asia and northern Australia and is cultivated in Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. The name ‘cajuput’ is derived from its Indonesian name, ‘kayu putih’. Cajuput oil is used in food and as a medicine.
Cajeput oil has primarily been established for being an antiseptic. Older research suggests it has antibacterial qualities, which could make the oil beneficial for minor cuts and scratches to help prevent infection. It may also have antifungal and antiviral effects on the skin. While not well-established, cajeput may also have anti-inflammatory effects to help with skin conditions like psoriasis and acne.
Cajuput makes an excellent decongestant and expectorant that helps to clear blocked sinuses and congested lungs. Add a few drops of the oil to diffuser, vaporize, or oil burner to rlieve sinusitis and blocked nose and to clear germs in the air or add a few drops to steam inhalation. Cajuput has shooting analgesic properties that can provide local pain relief from tension headaches and muscle and joint aches and pains.
